Mental Health Awareness and Barriers to Mental Healthcare Among University Students
Setu Akter*
Resumo
The problem of mental health in university students is urgent because of academic pressures, financial problems, uncertainty in the workplace, and social changes, which cause anxiety and depression. Although mental health awareness has risen, most of the students are unable to recognize the symptoms, communicate problems, and seek assistance. This research explores anxiety and depression-related mental health awareness and barriers to care and stigma and help-seeking intentions. A qualitative research design involves published academic articles, systematic reviews, and other pertinent literature. Thematic Analysis (reflexive). There were three overarching themes: poor mental health literacy, stigma, and practical barriers to care. Students are aware of general emotional distress but do not feel sure about the identification of clinical symptoms and reluctance to help themselves because of stigma and institutional problems such as insufficient counselling facilities, cost and lack of trust. Some of the recommendations proposed are enhancement of mental health literacy, expansion of confidential counselling and establishment of anti-stigma program alongside increased early detection of mental health conditions within the campus.
