Resumo

Agriculture is an economic activity in which humans modify and transform nature to meet their physical, psychological and social needs. Nature, long treated as an infinite resource, reacts in ways detrimental to humanity, and this has demonstrated the necessity of re-evaluating the production and consumption methods on which civilisation is built. Restructuring agricultural production toward sustainable approaches has therefore become an acknowledged imperative. In this context the adoption of new plant nutrition inputs — facilitated by advancing technology and characterised by lower production and environmental costs — has become crucial, offering an alternative to chemical fertilisers. This book compiles studies prepared by academics from diverse fields of expertise to serve that objective. Its five chapters address soil fertility and nutrient management for sustainable onion production in Morocco; the use of vermicompost in banana cultivation and its effects on growth, yield, quality and production costs; the phenolic profile of mulberry fruits and the effects of antioxidants on human health; air pollution in agricultural storage facilities, its sources, monitoring and mitigation; and plant-derived strategies for mitigating aflatoxin B1 toxicity in broiler chickens under tropical production systems.
