Women in family farming: An analysis of the Brazilian National Program to strengthen family farming for women
Hilka Pelizza Vier Machado, Marcos Aurélio Brambilla
Resumo
This study discusses whether the Pronaf Mulher credit, the main public program for family farms in Brazil, has helped increase the participation of women in family farming. A quantitative study was conducted with data from the Agricultural Census and the Pronaf Mulher by means of linear regression estimations using the ordinary least squares (OLS) method. Results revealed no relation between the Pronaf Mulher program and the participation of women in family farming. Control variables indicated that tertiary education negatively influenced the participation of women in family farming. In summary, as a family farm policy, Pronaf Mulher has not contributed to empower women in family farming, thereby underscoring the need for a more attentive approach to this policy to ensure an increased participation of women in rural enterprises.
